Does airplane mode affect GPS tracking on an iPhone?

No. GPS keeps working with airplane mode on, and switching it on partway through a recording does not interrupt the track. Airplane mode turns off the radios that talk to something outside the phone — cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth. GPS does not talk to anything; the receiver only listens to satellites, and listening is unaffected by any of those radios being off. Here is what the setting actually controls, and why it is worth using on purpose rather than avoiding out of caution.

The short answer

Turning on airplane mode does not stop an iPhone from determining its position, and it does not pause or corrupt a GPS recording already in progress. The two systems are unrelated: airplane mode is a switch for the phone's transmitting radios, and GPS reception does not involve transmitting anything at all.

What airplane mode actually switches off

Airplane mode is a single switch over several separate radios, each of which sends as well as receives:

  • Cellular — voice calls, text messages and mobile data all stop, because the radio that would reach a tower is off.
  • Wi-Fi — the phone stops scanning for and connecting to networks, though iOS lets you switch Wi-Fi back on again without leaving airplane mode, which keeps cellular off while allowing a specific known network to connect.
  • Bluetooth — the same applies here as with Wi-Fi: it can be switched back on independently while airplane mode stays on.

What all three have in common is that they are two-way: the phone sends a signal out and waits for something to answer. That is exactly what airplane mode exists to stop, originally because transmitting radios were the concern on an aircraft.

Why GPS is not on that list

A GPS receiver — and alongside it Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou, all used by modern iPhones — is receive-only. Satellites broadcast a signal continuously and the phone works out its position from the timing differences between several of them arriving. Nothing goes back up. There is no request being made and no reply being waited for, so there is nothing for airplane mode to switch off. This is also why GPS keeps working with no SIM and no data plan at all — a network was never part of the calculation.

The one thing that does change

With a data connection, a phone can download a rough position estimate and current satellite orbit data before it starts listening, which is what makes a fix in town feel almost instant. Without that hint — whether from airplane mode, no coverage, or simply no data plan — the receiver has to work out the same information from the satellite signal itself, which takes longer. The difference shows up only in how quickly the very first fix of a session arrives, not in anything about the fix once it has one.

In practice this means the moment to flip the switch matters a little. Turning on airplane mode after the recording has already found its first fix costs nothing, because the receiver keeps tracking from where it already is. Turning it on before you have ever gotten a fix that day — say, the moment you get out of the car — can mean a first fix takes closer to a minute than a few seconds. Neither is wrong; it is just worth knowing which one you are choosing.

Using it on purpose

Out of coverage, a phone does not simply give up and go quiet — it keeps transmitting at higher power, hunting for a tower it cannot reach, which is one of the larger and more avoidable sources of battery drain on a long day out. Airplane mode stops that search outright while leaving GPS completely unaffected, which is what makes it a genuinely useful setting on a hike rather than something to be cautious about.

A sensible order for a trailhead with no signal anyway: let the recording get its first fix, then turn on airplane mode for the walk, and turn it off again for a minute wherever the trail happens to cross back into coverage if you want to check for messages. If you want an offline map cached under your track, download that area at home over Wi-Fi beforehand — airplane mode has no bearing on maps that are already saved to the phone, only on fetching new tiles.

What still does not work in airplane mode

  • Calls and texts — including emergency calls in most regions, which is a safety point worth knowing independent of tracking, and a reason to turn it off briefly if you are somewhere you might need to reach anyone.
  • Anything that needs a live connection to a server — weather, live map tiles that were not cached in advance, and cloud backup, which queues and completes once you are back in coverage.
  • Sharing your live location with someone else in real time, since that depends on the phone being reachable, not on GPS itself.

None of these touch the coordinates being written into the route. The GPS fix and the recorded track are entirely local to the phone regardless of what airplane mode is doing.

After, if it is convenient to wait a moment. A first fix can draw on a network hint to lock on faster; once it has that first fix, switching to airplane mode for the rest of the walk costs nothing extra.
Can I still use Wi-Fi for an offline map while airplane mode is on?
Yes. iOS lets you switch Wi-Fi back on without leaving airplane mode, so cellular search stays off while a specific network, if one is reachable, is not. Downloading the map area in advance at home avoids needing any connection on the trail at all.
