How to track a hike without cell service

The short version: you can. GPS and the mobile network are two entirely separate systems, and your phone does not need one to use the other. Recording a route in a valley with no bars works exactly the same as recording one in a city — what changes is everything that needs the internet, which is mostly the map tiles under your line.

Why position still works with no signal

Global navigation satellite systems — GPS, and alongside it Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou, all of which modern iPhones use — are broadcast-only. The satellites transmit; your phone listens and works out where it is from the timing differences between several of them. Nothing is sent back. There is no account, no subscription, and no network involved in that calculation. It works over the ocean and in the desert for the same reason it works on a ridge.

What the mobile network normally contributes is speed, not capability. With data available, a phone can download a rough position hint and current satellite orbit data, which is why a fix is nearly instant in town. Without it, the phone has to read that information from the satellite signal itself, which is slower — this is the reason a first fix in the backcountry can take a minute or two rather than seconds.

TrailCam states this plainly: GPS recording does not need a data connection, and cloud backup happens once you are back online.

What actually stops working

  • Map tiles. The base map under your track is normally streamed. Without data you get your line drawn on a blank or partially cached background. The recording is unaffected.
  • Cloud sync and backup. This queues and completes when you are back in coverage.
  • Address and place-name lookup, weather, and anything else that queries a server.
  • Messaging and calls, obviously — including emergency calls in most cases, which is a safety consideration independent of tracking.

None of that touches the coordinates being written to your route. The distinction worth internalising is: the position is local, the map is remote.

How to prepare before you lose signal

Get the fix before you set off

Start the recording while you still have data, or at least stand still for a moment at the trailhead until the position settles. A fix acquired early is kept as long as the recording continues.

Cache or download the map

Apple Maps supports downloading an area for offline use, and dedicated mapping apps offer offline regions. Doing this at home over Wi-Fi costs nothing and means the background under your line is still there when the bars are not.

Airplane mode is a genuinely useful tool

Out of coverage, a phone burns power hunting for a network it will not find. Turning on airplane mode stops that search. Location services continue to work in airplane mode — the GNSS receiver is separate from the cellular radio — so you keep recording while cutting one of the larger sources of drain. Turn it off again periodically if you need to check for messages.

Let the screen stay off

A recording that survives the screen turning off is the normal expectation of any serious tracker. TrailCam continues recording with the screen off or while you are in another app, and if a recording is ever interrupted mid-walk it offers the unfinished route back the next time you open it.

What accuracy to expect off-grid

Open sky above a ridge or a meadow gives the best result you will get from a phone. Accuracy degrades in narrow canyons, under dense tree cover and against cliff faces, because the receiver loses sight of part of the sky and picks up signals that have bounced off rock before arriving. The visible symptom is a track that wanders slightly off the trail, or an elevation profile that gets noisier. This is a property of the physics, not of the app, and every recorder on the same walk sees it.

The practical implication is that distance measured through a tight forested valley will tend to read slightly long, because each small positional wobble adds a little length. Nothing is wrong; it is worth knowing before you compare two apps and conclude one of them is lying.

Questions

Does GPS work without a SIM card or data plan?
Yes. GNSS reception is one-way — the phone only listens to satellites. No SIM, plan or network is involved in determining position.
Can I record a route in airplane mode?
Yes. Location services keep working in airplane mode, and turning it on stops the phone wasting power searching for a network that is not there.
Why is the map blank but my track still drawn?
The track comes from the satellite fix, which is local to your phone. The map underneath is downloaded from a server, so with no data it cannot be fetched unless it was cached earlier.
