How to convert pace from minutes per mile to minutes per kilometer

Divide to go from miles to kilometres, multiply to go back โ€” the opposite of what converting a plain distance would have you do, which is exactly why a lot of quick mental conversions come out looking like a different person's walking pace. The arithmetic itself takes seconds. The part worth slowing down for is why the direction flips at all, because that is also the part that is easy to get backward.

The short answer

Divide a pace given in minutes per mile by 1.60934 to get minutes per kilometre. Multiply a pace given in minutes per kilometre by 1.60934 to go the other way. A pace of 15:00 per mile becomes about 9:19 per kilometre (15 รท 1.60934 โ‰ˆ 9.32, and 0.32 of a minute is about 19 seconds). A pace of 9:00 per kilometre becomes about 14:29 per mile (9 ร— 1.60934 โ‰ˆ 14.48, and 0.48 of a minute is about 29 seconds). The number 1.60934 is the same one used to convert any distance between miles and kilometres โ€” it is just the length of a mile expressed in kilometres โ€” but which operation to apply, multiply or divide, depends on what is being converted, and that is the part that catches people out.

Why converting a pace runs backward from converting a distance

Converting a distance from miles to kilometres means multiplying by 1.60934, because a kilometre is the shorter of the two units, so it takes more of them to describe the same stretch of trail โ€” 10 miles becomes about 16.09 kilometres, a bigger number for the same ground. Pace asks a different kind of question. It is not "how many kilometres fit in this distance," it is "how long does it take to cover one kilometre," and because a kilometre is shorter than a mile, it takes less time to walk one than it does to walk a mile โ€” so the pace number gets smaller when you switch to the smaller unit, not bigger.

Multiplying a pace by 1.60934 the way a distance would be converted produces a number that reads like a noticeably slower walker, not the same walker in different units. The factor itself is identical in both cases. The direction it gets applied is not, because distance and pace move in opposite directions when the unit gets smaller โ€” one goes up, the other goes down.

A worked example

Say a hike came out to 15 minutes 30 seconds per mile. Convert the seconds to a decimal first: 30 seconds is half a minute, so that is 15.5 minutes per mile. Divide by 1.60934: 15.5 รท 1.60934 โ‰ˆ 9.63 minutes per kilometre. The whole-minute part is 9; the remainder, 0.63, converts back to seconds by multiplying by 60: 0.63 ร— 60 โ‰ˆ 38. So 15:30 per mile comes out to about 9 minutes 38 seconds per kilometre.

Going the other direction from a rounder number: 8 minutes per kilometre times 1.60934 is about 12.87 minutes per mile โ€” 12 whole minutes, and 0.87 ร— 60 โ‰ˆ 52 seconds, so about 12:52 per mile.

The shortcut that goes wrong, and the one that works

A common shortcut is to round 1.60934 down to a friendlier 1.6 and apply it the way a distance conversion would โ€” multiply the mile pace by 1.6 to "get" a kilometre pace. That produces a number in the wrong direction: a 15-minute mile pace times 1.6 comes out to 24 minutes, which would describe someone walking at less than half the actual speed. The mistake is not the rounding โ€” it is carrying the habit of multiplying over from distance conversion into a quantity that needs dividing instead.

A shortcut that does work: dividing by 1.60934 is the same arithmetic as multiplying by its reciprocal, about 0.621. Multiplying a mile pace by roughly 0.62 lands in the same place as dividing by 1.60934, and some people find multiplying by a number just above a half easier to do in their head than dividing by something just above 1.6.

Things that trip people up

  • Multiplying instead of dividing when going from miles to kilometres, because that is the operation used for converting a distance and the habit carries over โ€” pace needs to move the other way.
  • Expecting the converted figure to land on a tidy round number โ€” actual walking paces rarely convert to neat numbers in both units at once, so a result like 9:19 per kilometre is not a sign anything went wrong.
  • Treating 30 seconds as 0.30 of a minute instead of 0.5 when converting to a decimal before doing the division โ€” getting that first step wrong throws off everything that follows it.
