Why does cold weather drain iPhone battery faster on a hike?
The same phone, the same app, the same length of walk â and on a cold morning the battery percentage falls faster, sometimes alarmingly so, and can even drop to zero and shut the phone off well before the number would suggest. This is not GPS working harder in the cold. It is the battery itself, and the difference is almost entirely chemistry, not software.
The short answer
Cold temperature reduces how much usable power a lithium-ion cell can deliver at any given moment, even though the amount of energy stored inside it barely changes. Below roughly freezing, that effect becomes pronounced enough that a phone can report a fast-falling percentage, or shut down at a percentage that would be perfectly normal indoors. GPS tracking itself uses about the same power in the cold as it does at room temperature â the receiver does not work harder because the air is colder. The battery just delivers less of what it has.
What is actually happening inside the battery
A lithium-ion cell produces current through a chemical reaction, and that reaction runs measurably slower at low temperature. The internal resistance of the cell rises, so for the same demand from the phone, the cell has to work harder to supply it and its voltage sags further than it would when warm. iOS estimates remaining charge partly from that voltage, so a cold cell can look like it has lost far more charge than it actually has. Warm the phone back up â an inside jacket pocket for ten minutes does it â and a chunk of that apparent loss often comes back, because the chemistry sped back up rather than the energy having been used.

On a genuinely cold day â well below freezing, with wind â expect a faster fall in the reported percentage than the same walk in mild weather would show, plan for it rather than being caught out by it, and treat a very low reading outdoors in the cold with some suspicion until the phone has had a few minutes somewhere warmer.
