How much iPhone storage do hiking video clips use?

A whole day of recorded GPS points is tiny — a text file of coordinates rarely runs past a few hundred kilobytes even after eight hours on the trail. Video is a different scale entirely, and it is video, not the route itself, that decides whether a long trip fills up a phone. Here is why the two are so far apart, and what actually helps if storage is running low.

The short answer

A GPS track is just a list of numbers — latitude, longitude, elevation, a timestamp, repeated once every few seconds. Text like that compresses down to almost nothing; a full day of hiking recorded point by point is usually a few dozen to a few hundred kilobytes once exported. Video is a different kind of data altogether, built from frames of an image many times a second, and even a short clip is easily tens of megabytes. If storage on a phone is disappearing during a trip, it is the clips doing it, not the line on the map.

That is not a reason to skip filming. It is a reason to know where the space is actually going, so a full phone on day three of a trip is not a mystery.

Why the gap between the two is so large

A track point is a handful of numbers

Every point in a GPS track is a few short fields written as plain text. Thousands of them, one for every few seconds of walking, still add up to something a text editor could open without complaint. There is no image data in a track at all — it describes where you were, not what it looked like.

A video clip is thousands of images

Video is a rapid sequence of frames, each one a full image, compressed to keep the file down to something manageable. Modern iPhones use an efficient codec by default (HEVC, also called H.265) that shrinks video considerably compared with older formats, but a moving image is still an image, over and over, dozens of times a second — nothing close to the size of a line of coordinates.

What actually changes the size of a clip

  • Length — longer clips are bigger clips, in a roughly straight line. A clip capped at a couple of minutes puts a natural ceiling on how much any single capture can cost, compared with letting a recording run indefinitely.
  • Resolution and frame rate — a higher resolution or a higher frames-per-second setting in the iPhone Camera settings means more image data every second, and a noticeably larger file for the same length of footage.
  • What is actually moving in frame — busy, detailed motion (running water, wind through leaves) is harder for a codec to compress efficiently than a mostly still shot, so two clips of the same length and settings are not always the same size.

Where the storage actually goes on a multi-day trip

On a single afternoon walk this is academic — a handful of short clips is a rounding error against a modern phone's storage. It starts to matter on a multi-day trip, where clips from several days stack up before there is a chance to offload anything, and it is easy to underestimate how quickly a dozen short videos add up compared with the same number of photos or voice notes, which cost almost nothing by comparison.

The GPS track itself never becomes the problem, no matter how many days it covers. It is worth knowing that distinction before deleting anything in a panic — the route data pinned to a trip is safe to keep regardless; it is the clips sitting on top of it that are worth being deliberate about.

What actually helps

  • Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage before a trip, not during it — it shows what is actually using space, rather than guessing.
  • iCloud sync, where an app offers it, moves the backup off the phone itself, so a full local library is not the only place a trip's clips live.
  • Shorter, deliberate clips beat filming everything — a two-minute cap is generous for capturing a moment without inviting an hour of footage into the storage bill.
  • Deleting old routes is not the only lever — most of a route's storage weight is its media, so removing a few oversized clips from an old trip frees far more space than deleting the route entirely would need to.

Does exporting a route to GPX include the video clips?
No. GPX is a coordinate format with no field for embedded media, so a GPX export carries the track — the tiny part — and none of the video, photos or voice notes pinned to it.
Does a longer hike use noticeably more storage just from the GPS track?
Barely. Track points are plain text and small individually, so even a long day of recording adds up to a file measured in kilobytes, not megabytes. Storage pressure on a trip comes from video, not from how long the track itself is.
Does recording in a lower resolution meaningfully save space?
Yes — resolution and frame rate are two of the biggest factors in how large a clip turns out, and a lower setting produces a noticeably smaller file for the same length of footage.
