Does live location sharing still work on a hike with no cell service?

No, not in any real sense — and the reason has nothing to do with GPS itself. A phone can always work out where it is, with or without a signal, because that calculation only involves listening to satellites. Telling someone else where you are is a completely different task: it means getting that position off your phone, across a network, and onto a screen that is not yours. Lose the network and the first task keeps going exactly as before; the second one stops cold. Mixing the two up is easy, because both get described with the same word, "location," and it is worth being clear about which one you are actually relying on before you head somewhere remote.

The short answer

Live location sharing — Share My Location under Find My, or the live-sharing option inside a messaging app — needs a working data connection to do its job, because sharing means sending your position somewhere. With no cell signal and no Wi-Fi, there is nothing for your phone to send that position over, so whoever you shared with simply stops getting updates. Meanwhile, a GPS recording running on the same phone at the same moment is entirely unaffected, because it never needed a network to know where you are in the first place — only to hand that position to someone else.

Two systems that both get called "location"

GPS positioning is one-way and local. Satellites broadcast; your phone listens to several of them at once and works out its own position from the timing differences. Nothing goes back up to a satellite, no account is involved, and no network sits anywhere in that chain — a recording app reads this position straight off the phone's own GNSS receiver, over and over, for as long as the hike lasts.

Live location sharing is a completely different shape of problem. Your phone still works out its position the same local way, but then it has to hand that position to a server somewhere, which then has to deliver it to another person's device, on some regular schedule, so the dot on their screen keeps moving. That is two network hops your phone has no control over once the first one is missing, and both of them depend on exactly the kind of connection a remote trail is least likely to have.

Why sharing needs a connection twice over, not once

It is tempting to think of "no signal" as one simple outage, but live sharing actually depends on connectivity being present on both ends of the exchange, at overlapping moments. Your phone needs a connection to send an update. The service in the middle needs to receive it and hold it. The other person's phone needs its own connection to pull the update down. A recording running locally on your phone does not care about any of that — it only has one link in its chain, from the sky to the receiver in your pocket, and that link does not go through cell towers or the internet at any point.

What actually happens once you step out of coverage

The GPS recording keeps writing new points at the same rate it always has, signal or no signal, because losing cell coverage removes nothing that recording depends on. Live sharing, on the other hand, simply stops sending anything new. It does not fail loudly or notify the other person that something has gone wrong — from their side, the shared position just stops moving, sitting wherever it last managed to update before you walked out of range. Nothing about that pause is visible to you either; there is no on-screen warning that says "the person you shared with can no longer see you," because your phone is not the one that knows whether the message got through.

The part that actually matters: a stale dot looks the same as a current one

This is the detail worth sitting with rather than the connection mechanics themselves. A pin that stopped updating forty minutes ago, because you walked into a valley with no coverage, looks on someone else's screen exactly like a pin that is accurately showing where you are right now — there is nothing about a static dot that distinguishes "this is current" from "this is the last thing that got through." Most sharing features do show a last-updated time somewhere in the interface, but that detail is easy to miss if someone is glancing at a map rather than reading timestamps, and a pin sitting still is the normal appearance of someone resting at a viewpoint just as much as it is the appearance of someone whose signal dropped an hour ago. Once you are back in coverage, sharing catches up and starts moving again on its own; nothing needs to be restarted by hand.

Things that trip people up

  • Assuming that because a hiking app "has GPS," it must also be quietly sharing your position with someone — recording a route and sharing it live with a person are unrelated capabilities, and an app doing the first is not automatically doing the second.
  • Treating a live-shared pin as proof someone is watching in real time throughout a hike — once coverage drops, the pin freezes without saying so, and it can stay frozen for the entire stretch you are actually off-grid.
  • Expecting airplane mode to behave differently here than an ordinary dead zone — either way, the phone has no network to send an update over, so live sharing pauses the same way in both cases, even though GPS recording keeps working in both cases too.
  • Confusing a paused live share with a broken recording — they are opposite situations. The share pausing means nothing was sent out; the recording continuing means the route is still being written to your phone the entire time.
