Why your GPS distance doesn’t match the trailhead sign

You finish a hike, check the app, and the number does not match the sign you passed at the trailhead. Nine times out of ten, nothing is broken. A trailhead sign and a recorded GPS track are two separate measurements of the same trail, made by different methods at different times, and a small gap between them is the normal outcome rather than a sign that either one is wrong.

The short answer

A printed distance is a single fixed number, measured once, some time in the past, and rarely updated after that. A recorded GPS track is the literal path your phone logged you walking, point by point, on that particular day. They can agree closely, and often do, but there is no reason to expect them to match to the metre — they were never the same measurement to begin with.

If your recorded number comes out a little longer than the sign, that is the more common outcome and rarely means anything went wrong.

How the sign got its number

Trail distances on signs, maps and guidebooks come from a handful of sources: a measuring wheel walked along the centre of the path when the sign was made, a distance pulled from an agency’s GIS layer for the trail, or a figure copied forward from an older survey and never re-measured. All three describe an idealised line down the middle of the trail as it existed at the time — not the path any one hiker actually walks.

Trails also change without their signage catching up. A section gets rerouted around erosion or a washed-out bridge, a short-cut becomes the de facto path, a switchback gets an extra loop added to ease the grade. The paint on the sign does not know about any of that, so it keeps quoting a number for a trail that no longer runs exactly where it once did.

How your GPS got its number

A recorded track is the opposite kind of measurement: not a planned line, but every point your phone actually logged, added up as straight-line segments between consecutive points. That includes anything you did that a measuring wheel walked once down the centre of the trail never would — stepping off the path for a view, wandering to the edge of a switchback, a short backtrack to look at something, or simply drifting a little from side to side over a long day. Every one of those adds a sliver of length the sign’s number never accounted for.

Under tree cover the effect compounds further, because a weaker signal makes the recorded line wander a few metres either side of where you actually walked, and every wobble adds distance a perfectly straight path would not have. None of that is a fault in the recording — it is what a point-by-point measurement does that a single planned distance never has to.

The other direction is possible too, though less common: on very tight switchbacks, a track recorded at a coarse interval can end up cutting the corner slightly, joining two points with a straight segment where the real trail bent sharply, which shaves a small amount off rather than adding it.

Which number to trust

For planning — deciding whether a hike fits the daylight you have, or roughly how long it will take — the sign is good enough, and arguing with it over a few hundred metres is not a productive use of anyone’s afternoon. For understanding your own effort on the day, the recorded track is the more honest number, because it reflects the ground you actually covered rather than an idealised line drawn once by someone else.

The comparison that actually means something is a route against itself over time — the same trail, recorded the same way, on different visits — not a recorded track against a number painted on a board years ago. For planning a hike, the guidebook figure is a reasonable estimate. For understanding the effort of a specific day, your recorded track is the more accurate number, because it reflects the path you actually walked rather than an idealised line measured once in the past.
