Why does a phone get warm while recording a long hike?
A few hours into a long day, a phone that has been recording a route the whole time often feels distinctly warm to the touch, sometimes enough to notice through a pocket. It is easy to assume that is the GPS working hard, but the receiver itself is a small part of the story. Most of what makes a phone warm on a tracked hike is exactly what would make it warm sitting on a table in the same conditions â it is just harder to notice indoors.

A little warmth over several hours of continuous recording is normal and not a sign anything is wrong. It comes from several small, ordinary sources adding up over a long stretch of time â the GPS receiver, the battery itself, and very often direct sunlight, which is a bigger factor outdoors than most people expect. What is actually generating the heat
Several small, ordinary sources run for the length of a whole hike, and warmth is what running for hours instead of minutes looks like:
- The GPS receiver itself, producing a position fix continuously for as long as recording is on. Its own draw is modest, but modest for one minute and modest for six hours add up very differently.
- The battery discharging. Any lithium battery gives off a small amount of heat while it is supplying current, and it does this more noticeably the longer and steadier the draw is, which is exactly what a multi-hour recording looks like from the battery's side.
- The processor handling location data in the background â turning raw position fixes into a track, a distance, and a pace â a small, steady job rather than a demanding one, but a steady one for the whole hike.
- The screen, whenever it is on. Checking distance or pace by waking the display is a brief but real burst of heat on top of everything else, and it is the one item on this list that is squarely under your control.
Why the sun usually does more than any of that
A phone sitting in a hand, a pack's front strap pocket, or an outer pocket in direct sun for hours is absorbing heat from outside far more effectively than any chip inside it is generating heat from within. A dark case or a dark phone back in full sun can get warm from sunlight alone, with no app open and no recording running at all â the same way a dark car dashboard gets hot on a sunny day. What changes if the phone gets too warm

- Keep the phone out of direct sun where that is practical â an inner pocket rather than a pack's front strap pocket in full sun, or the shaded side of a pack rather than the top.
- Use a light-coloured case rather than a dark one if heat in the sun is a recurring problem; dark surfaces absorb more of it.
- Check the screen less often and let spoken distance and pace announcements do that job instead, since waking the display is one of the few heat sources on this list that is fully within your control.
- Do not leave a recording phone on a hot surface, like a sun-baked rock or a car dashboard, during a break â that is a much bigger heat source than anything the recording itself is doing.

- Assuming warmth means the GPS chip is working unusually hard â it almost never is. The receiver's own contribution is modest and roughly constant; what changes is how long it has been running and how much sun the phone has been sitting in.
- Stopping a recording out of concern that warmth alone means damage â ordinary warmth from several hours of use is expected and is not the same thing as the phone actually overheating.
- Blaming whichever app happens to be open when the phone feels warm â the phone manages its own temperature at the system level regardless of which app is in the foreground or recording in the background.
- Confusing warmth with battery drain â they share some causes but are not the same measurement, and a phone can run down noticeably without ever feeling warm, or feel warm from the sun alone while barely using extra battery.
