Why does a hike look shorter on the map than the distance shown?
Glance at a route on a map and your eye does something the GPS track itself never does: it smooths every small wiggle into one clean sweep. The distance figure next to it has no such shortcut — it adds up every short segment between every recorded point, switchbacks, meanders and all, which is why a line that looks like a short stroll can carry a much bigger number than it appears to deserve.
The short answer
A hiking trail is rarely a straight line, even when it looks like one at the zoom level you're viewing it at. Switchbacks climbing a slope, a path that hugs the curve of a stream, a short detour around a fallen tree — each one adds real distance on the ground while barely changing how the route looks once it's drawn small on a screen. The distance number is built from the sum of every short segment between recorded points along the whole path, so it picks up all of that extra length. Your eye, glancing at the finished line, picks up almost none of it.
Your eye simplifies the route before you've even measured it
Look at a route on a map and your brain does not trace every turn — it reads the overall shape and treats a series of tight curves as one gentle bend, especially once the whole hike is shrunk down to fit on a screen. That's an efficient way to read a shape, but it throws away exactly the information a distance measurement depends on: how many times the path actually turned back on itself, and by how much. A dozen switchbacks stacked on a hillside can look, at a glance, like a single diagonal line.
The recorded distance doesn't get to take that shortcut
Distance is calculated the plain way: measure the gap between one recorded point and the next, and add that up across the whole route. It has no concept of an overall shape to simplify toward — a hairpin turn contributes exactly the two short segments that make it up, the same as a straight stretch of trail contributes the segments that make it up. A spur trail that goes out to a viewpoint and comes straight back covers that same ground twice, and the distance total reflects both directions even though, drawn on a map, the out-and-back line can look no wider than the trail beneath it.
Zoom changes what you can see, not what you walked
Zooming out to fit a whole hike on one screen is what makes this most obvious. At a wide enough zoom, a switchback section a few hundred metres wide might occupy the same handful of pixels as a short, straight stretch of trail — visually, they look like similar-sized parts of the route, even though walking them is nothing alike. Zooming back in restores the detail your eye was skipping over, and the same route that looked like a short loop at the wide view suddenly shows all the doubling-back that was there the whole time.
When it's actually worth a second look
A visual mismatch on its own is not a sign anything went wrong — trails wind, and the distance total adds up every bit of that winding. It's worth checking the track itself, rather than just chalking it up to perception, when the trail is one you know to be genuinely straight and the number still looks inflated; that points toward ordinary GPS noise adding small back-and-forth jitter to a still or slow-moving stretch, which is a different problem with a different cause.

- No — the distance is fixed once the hike is recorded. Zooming only changes how much of the route's detail your screen has room to show you at once.
- Could this actually mean my GPS track is wrong?
- Usually not. It's a much more likely explanation on an ordinary trail with turns, switchbacks or a spur than a sign of a faulty recording. It's worth a closer look only on a stretch you know is genuinely straight, where GPS noise rather than the shape of the trail would be the more likely cause of extra distance.
