What happens if you forget to stop recording a hike?
A recording keeps going until something tells it to stop, and "I am done walking" is not a signal any app can see. So the track quietly keeps logging through the drive home, or the rest of the afternoon, exactly as if it were still part of the hike â because as far as the recording is concerned, it is. The fix is simple once you notice, but it helps to know exactly which numbers are affected and which ones are not, so you are not left guessing whether the whole hike is ruined.
The short answer
Distance keeps adding up for as long as the recording runs, so a drive home tacked onto the end of a hike adds real distance to the total â often far more than the walk itself covered, since a car covers in a couple of minutes what takes a walker the better part of an hour. Moving time usually keeps counting too, because sitting in traffic or cruising down a road still reads as movement to a device with no idea what kind of movement it is looking at. Elevation gain only changes if the extra stretch actually went up or down; a flat drive home barely touches it. None of this is permanent â the extra points can be trimmed off the end of the track after the fact, the same way an accidentally recorded drive to the trailhead can be trimmed off the start.
Why the app cannot tell a hike is over
A GPS track is a plain sequence of points â a latitude, a longitude, an elevation, a timestamp â logged from the moment recording starts to the moment it stops. Nothing in that sequence carries a label for "the interesting part is over now." An app can guess that you have stopped moving, which is exactly what a pause does, but it has no way to guess that you have started moving again for a completely different reason than before. Walking the last hundred metres back to the car and then driving away look, to the recording, like the same continuous activity â because from the phone's point of view, that is exactly what happened. Nothing was ever told otherwise.
What actually gets thrown off
- Distance: inflated, and usually by a lot. A short drive covers a distance a walking pace would need much longer to match, so even a five-minute drive can add a noticeable chunk to a modest hike's total.
- Moving time: usually inflated too, for a reason that trips people up â see the next section. A drive rarely looks like standing still to the recording, so it rarely gets excluded the way a genuine rest stop does.
- Pace and average speed: skewed in whichever direction the extra stretch pulls them. A fast drive dragged into a slow hike's numbers can make the combined pace look better than the walk actually was, which is its own kind of misleading.
- Elevation gain: usually the least affected of the four, and sometimes not affected at all. It only grows if the extra distance actually climbed or descended â a level road home contributes close to nothing, while a winding descent from a mountain trailhead can add a real amount.
Why moving time does not save you here
It is tempting to assume moving time quietly fixes this on its own, since it already exists to strip out time spent standing around. But moving time is usually worked out from how fast you were going, not from what you were doing â a speed comfortably above a walking pace reads as movement no matter what is actually producing it. That is a sound way to separate a rest stop from a hike, since a rest stop genuinely does look like standing still. A car does not look like standing still. It looks like fast, sustained movement, which is precisely what moving time is built to count as real progress.
This is a different mechanism from a manual pause. Pausing a recording on purpose tells the app to stop logging altogether, so a paused stretch never becomes distance, moving time, or elevation gain in the first place â it is treated as if it never happened. Forgetting to stop is the opposite situation: the recording is still fully active, still logging real points, still doing exactly what it is supposed to do with the information it has. There is no gap for the app to notice, because there is no gap at all.
What to do once you notice
Stop the recording as soon as you realise, rather than waiting until you are fully home. Every extra minute is more distance and, usually, more moving time added on top of a number that was already accurate. Stopping late is not a disaster â it just means a longer stretch to deal with afterward â but stopping the moment you remember is always the cheapest fix available.
After that, the extra stretch can be trimmed off the end of the track the same way a drive recorded at the start of a hike gets trimmed off the beginning: cropping the activity on the service you uploaded it to, re-exporting from the source if the app lets you review the route first, or editing the raw file directly, since a GPX file is plain text and every point sits on its own editable line. None of this touches anything you filmed or photographed during the hike itself â media stays pinned to the points where you actually took it, regardless of what happens to points recorded later.
Things that trip people up
- Assuming the whole hike is unusable once a drive gets tacked onto the end of it â it is not; only the extra stretch is wrong, and it can be identified and removed without touching the rest of the track.
- Expecting moving time to have excluded the drive automatically, the way it excludes a rest stop â it usually will not, because a fast drive does not resemble standing still, which is the situation moving time is actually built to detect.
- Panicking about elevation gain specifically â it is often the number least affected, since a level drive home changes altitude very little compared to how much distance it adds.
- Forgetting that pausing after the fact does not undo what was already recorded â a pause only protects time from the moment you tap it onward; anything logged before that point is already part of the track and needs to be trimmed, not paused away.
