Does using a dark theme save battery while tracking a hike?

Sometimes, and only for the part of the hike where the screen is actually on. Whether a dark theme saves anything at all depends on how the screen itself is built, and even where it does help, the saving applies to the minutes spent looking at the phone, not to the hours of GPS recording running quietly underneath. The two are separate costs, and a dark theme can only ever touch one of them.

The short answer

A dark theme can lower the amount of power a screen draws while it is lit, but the size of that saving depends on the screen's own hardware, and it only applies while the display is actually on. It does nothing to the GPS receiver, which keeps logging position at the same rate regardless of which colours happen to be on screen at the time. Why a dark theme can genuinely save power

On a screen where each pixel produces its own light, a black pixel is not a dark pixel being lit dimly — it is a pixel that is switched off. No light being produced there means no power being spent there. A mostly dark interface, on a screen built this way, is made up of a large share of pixels that are simply not drawing current, while only the text, icons and route line are actually lit. This is a real, measurable saving, not a placebo — it is a direct consequence of how that kind of display produces light in the first place.

Why it does nothing on some screens

A different kind of screen works the opposite way: a single backlight sits behind the whole panel and shines through it constantly, at whatever brightness the phone has settled on, while a layer of pixels in front either lets that light through or blocks it. Outdoors, the display is usually fighting the sun rather than a dark room, and auto-brightness answers that by pushing the screen toward its brightest setting so the map stays readable. A bright screen costs more than a dim one regardless of which theme is showing, and on a sunny ridge that brightness cost can be larger than anything a dark theme saves underneath it. A dark theme and a lower brightness are not competing fixes for the same problem — they stack, but brightness is usually doing more of the work.

Things that trip people up

  • Expecting a dark theme to slow GPS battery drain — it has no effect on the receiver at all, since that cost has nothing to do with what colour the screen happens to be showing.
  • Assuming every phone benefits the same amount — the saving depends entirely on how that particular screen produces light, and on some screens a dark theme changes nothing about the power it draws.
