Does picking the wrong activity type affect your GPS track?

Barely, in the ways that would actually worry you. Choosing an activity type at the start of a recording changes how a route is labelled and coloured afterwards, not how many satellites a phone can see or how often it asks them where you are. The GPS receiver logs the same points at the same rate no matter what word is attached to the recording. The more interesting question is a slightly different one — whether the app reading those points afterwards treats them any differently depending on the label — and that is worth understanding, because it explains a few things people otherwise blame on tracking going wrong.

The short answer

Activity type is a label attached to a recording, not an instruction sent to the GPS receiver. The chip that works out position from satellite signals has no idea whether the app it is feeding calls this a hike or a bike ride, and it would not change its behaviour even if it did — it just keeps producing position, elevation and time for every point at the same rate throughout. Picking hiking instead of cycling by mistake does not make a track less accurate, thin it out, or change a single recorded coordinate.

What activity type is generally used for

Across GPS-tracking apps in general, activity type usually does two jobs, and only one of them touches the data itself. The first is display: a colour on the map, an icon in a history list, a category to group similar routes under. The second, in apps that do it, is a filtering signal. Raw GPS occasionally produces a point that is obviously wrong — a brief jump far off the real path, a speed no human or vehicle in that category could plausibly reach — and some apps use a plausible-speed range as one clue for deciding whether a point looks like real movement or like noise worth smoothing over.

That plausible range is naturally different depending on what is being recorded. A brief reading of 40 km/h is an unremarkable moment on a fast bike descent and an obvious outlier in the middle of a walk. An app that leans on activity type this way is not treating hiking and cycling data differently out of favouritism — it is using the label as one extra piece of context for a judgment call it already has to make about which points to trust.

What it never touches

Nothing about the underlying recording changes with the label: not how many times a position gets logged, not the raw accuracy of any single point, not the elevation reading that comes with it, not the timestamp attached to it. Those all come from the same receiver hardware doing the same job, listening to the same satellites, regardless of what the recording is filed under. If a track is noisy or clean, that was decided by sky visibility and satellite geometry at the time, long before activity type entered the picture.

Why the label still matters, just not for that reason

The place activity type genuinely earns its keep is afterwards, in how a history reads back. Totals only make sense grouped by like with like — a distance-for-the-year figure is only useful if the hikes in it are actually tagged as hikes rather than sitting mixed in with bike rides under the wrong label. Colour-coding a map by activity is a convenience for the same reason: a glance at a cluster of routes tells you which ones were on foot and which were on two wheels. None of that is about what happened on the trail. It is about how the record of it gets sorted back out later.

Things that trip people up

  • Worrying that picking cycling by mistake for a walk means the walk was tracked less accurately — it was not; the receiver logged the same points either way, only the label attached to them differs.
  • Assuming a fast, smoothed-over descent was a tracking failure, when it may just be the ordinary outlier handling of whichever app is being used, reacting to a plausible-speed check tied to the activity chosen.
  • Expecting a corrected label, changed after the fact in an app that allows it, to re-record anything about the route — it relabels the entry; the points underneath stay exactly as they were logged.
  • Picking whatever activity type happens to be selected by default out of habit, then wondering later why a yearly hiking or cycling total looks off — a total is only as accurate as the labels behind the routes that feed it.
