Does pausing a hike affect the elevation gain number at the end?

No, and the reason is simpler than it sounds: elevation gain is not a measure of time, it is a sum of upward movement between recorded points, and a paused track stops recording points at all. Nothing happens during a pause because nothing is being asked to happen. The more interesting question is what would go wrong if a track kept recording while you stood still, because that is the situation elevation gain is genuinely bad at handling — and it is exactly what pausing avoids.

The short answer

Pausing does not add to, subtract from, or otherwise touch the elevation gain total. While a track is paused, no new points are being logged, so there is nothing for the elevation calculation to look at during that stretch — no altitude readings, no gaps, no drift. A five-minute pause and a fifty-minute pause cost the exact same amount toward elevation gain: nothing. The number only ever changes because of points recorded while the track is actively running.

What elevation gain is actually built from

Elevation gain is not read off a summit sign or looked up once — it is added up, point by point, from a whole recorded track. Each point in the route carries an altitude reading. Walk from one point to the next and compare the two altitudes: if the second is higher, that difference gets added to the running total; if it is lower, it gets ignored, because gain only counts the up. String together every point in a hike this way and the sum at the end is the elevation gain figure shown afterwards.

That means the total depends entirely on the sequence of recorded points and how their altitudes compare to each other, not on how much real-world time the hike took, and not on anything that happened while the track was not recording.

Why standing still is the hard case for this kind of math

GPS altitude is noisier than GPS position. Satellites sit above the horizon, not in a ring around it, so the geometry available for working out how high you are is weaker than the geometry for working out where you are — a receiver's vertical reading wobbles a few metres up and down even while held perfectly steady, in a way its horizontal position mostly does not. That wobble is usually harmless, because a walker's real altitude is changing anyway and the noise is small next to the actual climb. Standing still is the one situation where the noise is the entire signal: if a track kept logging points while you stayed in one spot, the up-down jitter in each reading would look, to the elevation-gain math, exactly like small real climbs and descents. Because the total only counts the upward half of every comparison, that jitter does not average out to zero — it slowly manufactures gain out of a stationary phone.

Why pausing sidesteps the problem entirely

A paused track is not a track that is recording noisy, stationary points — it is a track that has stopped recording any points at all for that stretch. There is no altitude jitter to sum, because there is no altitude reading being taken in the first place. That is a different mechanism from the elevation math being smart enough to recognise you stopped moving; it is simpler than that. The recording itself pauses, so the input to the calculation goes quiet, and quiet input adds nothing to a running total. This is the same reason paused time never counts toward moving time — the two numbers are protected by the same gap in what got recorded.

What can still nudge the number, just not the pause itself

The one place a small effect can show up is right at the seam — the last point logged before you paused and the first one logged after you resume. Those two readings were taken slightly apart in time and possibly in exact position, the same way the very first few readings at the start of a hike can carry a bit more noise before the receiver settles in. That is a small, one-time difference sitting at the boundary of a pause, not something that grows the longer the break lasts. A ten-second pause and a two-hour lunch stop carry the same seam-sized effect, if any, because the length of the pause itself was never part of the calculation to begin with.

Things that trip people up

  • Assuming a long break will inflate elevation gain the way it would inflate elapsed time — it will not, because elevation gain and elapsed time are built from completely different inputs, and a pause empties out the one that elevation gain depends on.
  • Worrying that sitting down to rest on uneven ground will register as climbing and descending — it will not, as long as the track is actually paused rather than still quietly recording in the background.
  • Expecting the elevation total to look different depending on whether a lunch stop was five minutes or fifty — it will not; the running total only reads points that were logged, and a pause logs none.
  • Blaming a small jump in elevation gain on the pause itself when it is really the ordinary settling effect at the start or end of any recorded stretch, the same small seam that shows up around any two consecutive points taken apart in time.
