The short answer
A video clip, a voice note and a photo are all pinned the same way: to the GPS fix the route had at the moment you tapped to capture. For a photo that single instant is also the only instant, since a photo happens and is over. Why a pin needs one instant, not a start-to-finish span
A point on a GPS track is a single coordinate, not a stretch of ground â latitude, longitude, and usually elevation and a timestamp, all describing one moment. Pinning a piece of media to a route means attaching it to one of those points, which means choosing exactly one moment to represent something that might not be instantaneous at all. A route itself is built the same way underneath: a walk of several hours is really just thousands of single moments recorded one after another and joined into a line. A pin is no different in kind â it is one of those moments, singled out and given a photo, a clip or a note to carry, rather than a new kind of object with a start and an end of its own.
Which instant it is, and why
The instant that gets used is the one when the recording begins â the tap that starts the camera or the microphone, not whatever happens to be true by the time either one stops. That follows from what a pin actually is: a coordinate read off the route at the moment of capture, and the moment a capture begins is the only moment that coordinate can be read at before anything else has happened. A clip does not know in advance how it will end or where you will be standing when the two-minute limit arrives or you tap to stop early, so there is no later moment available to read a position from that would make more sense than the one already on record. The start is not an arbitrary choice among options â it is the only point in time the pin could ever have been taken from.
What that means if you keep walking while you record
A voice note left while you keep walking, or a clip filmed while strolling toward whatever you are pointing the camera at, covers real ground between the moment it starts and the moment it ends. The pin does not follow that ground â it stays exactly where the recording began, so a clip that opens on a ridge and ends further down the trail is pinned at the ridge, not somewhere between the two, and certainly not at wherever the last frame happened to be shot. Replay the route later and the clip sits at the point where you lifted the phone and pressed record, even if most of what is actually in the clip was filmed while moving away from that exact spot.
None of this is a defect in the recording â the clip itself still holds everything that happened during it, in order, regardless of where the pin sits on the map. The gap is specifically between the pin's location and the content's location once the two of you have moved apart during capture, not between the clip and what it shows.
Why this shows up more on a clip or a voice note than on a photo
A photo can never have this problem, because there is no time between when it starts and when it ends â pressing the shutter is the whole event, so the single fix used for the pin is also, definitionally, a fix taken at the exact moment the photo itself was taken. A clip or a voice note introduces a gap a photo structurally cannot have: real time passes between the fix the pin is built from and whatever the recording captures afterward. Standing still for the whole length of a clip closes that gap back down to nothing, which is why a clip filmed from one fixed spot behaves, for pinning purposes, exactly like a photo does â one instant, one true position, nothing to walk away from.
What actually helps, if the pin matters
Standing in one spot for the whole length of a clip or a note keeps the start position and the content lined up, the same way a photo naturally is â there is no walking involved to create a gap in the first place. Starting the recording a beat before the moment that matters, rather than partway into walking toward it, moves the pin closer to what actually ends up being interesting in the clip. Talking into a voice note while still walking is perfectly fine for the note itself; it only means the pin marks where the note began rather than the ground covered while recording it, which is worth knowing rather than something to try to prevent.
