Why does a hike replay play faster than you actually walked it?

Open a saved route and the whole walk draws itself across the map in well under the time it actually took to walk it — three hours out on the trail, over in a minute or two of watching. That is not a shortcut and not a glitch. A replay was never meant to be a live rerun of the walk, second for second — it exists to show the shape of where you went, quickly enough that looking back is something you would actually sit down and do.

The short answer

A recorded hike and a replayed hike are built from the same points but answer different questions. The recording holds a timestamp on every point, and duration — moving time — comes straight out of those timestamps, exactly as slow or fast as the walk actually was. The replay ignores that literal pace on purpose: it draws the track from start to finish in whatever short span makes it watchable, dropping in pinned clips, photos and voice notes at the point along the route where you took them. That stretched-or-shrunk playback speed is not measured or recorded anywhere — it is just how the animation gets drawn, decided fresh every time you open the replay.

Why a replay was never going to run at walking pace

A recording exists to capture what actually happened, at whatever pace it actually happened at — that is the entire value of a timestamp on every point. A replay exists to be looked at, and something meant to be looked at only earns its keep if looking at it costs less time than living it did. A time-lapse of a sunset works on the same logic: nobody wants a video of a sunset that takes as long to watch as the sunset took to happen, even though the real sunset is the only version that is technically accurate. Compressing a walk into a replay you will actually sit through is the same trade, made for the same reason.

What stays true to the walk, even sped up

The one thing a sped-up replay does not get to throw away is order and relative position. A clip captured a fifth of the way into a three-hour hike still appears a fifth of the way into the replay, never shuffled to some other point on the map, because the whole animation is scaled evenly across the recorded track rather than assembled piece by piece. A long, flat stretch between two points of interest still takes proportionally longer to draw across the map than a short switchback where you stopped twice within a few hundred metres — the replay is a uniformly compressed version of the real track, not a highlight reel that skips the quiet parts and lingers on the interesting ones.

The wrinkle: a break does not turn into a long pause in the replay

Pausing a hike keeps that time out of the recorded duration in the first place — that is what moving time means, and it is the reason pausing exists at all. A twenty-minute break sitting at an overlook does not turn into twenty slow, empty seconds in the replay, waiting for something to happen. There is no gap to draw, because that stretch was never counted as part of the walk to begin with. The replay simply moves from the point before the break to the point after it, the same way the moving-time figure already does.

Questions

Does a longer hike replay faster than a short one?
Generally, yes. Most replay animations aim for a watchable length rather than a fixed speed, so a three-hour hike and a thirty-minute walk can both finish playing back in a similar span, which means the longer one is moving through more recorded time per second of watching. Either way, the point is the same — seeing the whole shape of a route in one short sitting.
Does watching the replay change the hike's recorded distance, duration or elevation gain?
No. Those figures come from the recorded points themselves and are fixed once the hike is saved. The replay is only a way of watching the route back afterwards — it does not recalculate or alter any of the numbers behind it.
Why doesn't a break or a long rest show up as a pause in the replay?
Because that time was never part of the recorded duration to start with. Pausing keeps a break out of moving time, so there is no gap in the data for the replay to draw — it moves straight from before the pause to after it.
