Does taking a lot of photos on a hike affect your GPS track?

No. Stopping every few minutes to photograph a view, a trail marker, or a dog doing something ridiculous does not thin out, pause, or degrade the GPS track underneath, no matter how many times it happens over the course of a hike. A camera and a location receiver are two separate pieces of hardware doing two separate jobs, and one of them does not need to know or care what the other is doing. The more useful question is why that is true, because it is the same reason a handful of other things people worry about turn out not to matter either.

The short answer

Route recording runs on its own schedule in the background, logging a position at whatever interval the app is using, regardless of what is happening on screen at that moment. Opening the camera, framing a shot, and tapping the shutter does not pause that schedule, slow it down, or skip a beat while it happens. Ten photos and a hundred photos cost the GPS track the same thing: nothing. The track you get back at the end has exactly as many points in it as it would have if the camera had never been touched.

What actually happens when you take a photo

Tapping the shutter turns the camera sensor on, captures a single frame, and lets go again — the whole thing is over in a fraction of a second of active use. None of that involves the location receiver in any way. The camera reads light through a lens; the GPS receiver reads signals from satellites. They are different sensors, doing different work, and taking a photo never asks the second one to do anything differently.

Why the two systems do not compete for the same job

A background location thread and a foreground camera action are handled as separate jobs, not as one queue where a photo has to wait its turn behind a GPS fix or the other way around. The phone is capable of running both at once because they draw on different hardware and different parts of the operating system. This is the same reason a video clip — a far bigger foreground task, holding the screen and camera on for up to two minutes at a time — does not interrupt the track either, as covered in the guide to video clips and battery life. A photo is a much smaller version of the same non-event: brief, foreground, and entirely separate from the recording running underneath it.

Where a lot of photos does have a real cost — just not this one

Dozens of photos across a long hike are not free. Each one takes up storage, and each shutter press is a small, repeated draw on the battery, the same as any other brief use of the screen and camera. Those costs are real and worth being aware of on a long day out. But they land on storage and battery, not on the shape or completeness of the GPS track. A hike with forty photos pinned along it and a hike with none produce an identical route underneath — the same points, the same spacing, the same total distance — because the track was never the thing being spent on.

What would actually interrupt a track, since photos do not

The things that genuinely end or gap a recording early are unrelated to the camera: force-quitting the app, losing background location permission, or the phone running out of battery mid-hike. Those are covered in their own guides, because each has a different mechanism and a different fix. Taking a photo is not on that list, and does not lead to any of those outcomes on its own — it is a brief, self-contained action that starts and finishes before the next scheduled GPS fix even comes due.

Things that trip people up

  • Worrying that a burst of photos in a short stretch — cresting a ridge, say — will leave a gap in the track. It will not; the location schedule keeps running underneath every single one of them.
  • Holding off on taking a photo because a GPS point feels like it is "due" any second. There is no such conflict to time around; the two systems never wait on each other.
  • Blaming a genuinely thin or gappy stretch of track on having taken a lot of photos nearby, when the real cause is one of the things that actually does interrupt recording, like a dropped permission or a dead battery.
  • Assuming a photo-heavy hike must have used noticeably more battery for the tracking itself — the extra draw comes from the camera and screen time, not from the location receiver working any harder.

Is there a limit to how many photos I can pin to a hike before it affects the track?
Not for the track itself. More photos use more storage over time, but the GPS points recorded are exactly the same whether a hike has a handful of photos or dozens.
If a section of my track looks thin, could a lot of photos taken there be the cause?
It is unlikely. A thin or gapped stretch is almost always caused by something else — weak GPS signal, a dropped permission, or the app being force-quit — rather than by photos taken nearby, which never interrupt the recording schedule.
