Does restarting your phone improve GPS accuracy on a hike?
Restarting the phone is the reflex fix for almost anything that looks wrong on a screen, and a GPS track weaving badly through open ground can feel like exactly that kind of problem. Sometimes a restart does help, because it clears out a specific kind of stale state the location system can genuinely get stuck in. Just as often, though, the thing making a track look rough has nothing to do with any state on the phone at all, and a restart changes none of it â while costing a few real minutes of a hike that is already underway.
The short answer
Occasionally, yes â but for a narrower reason than most people assume, and less often than it feels like it should. A restart forces the location system to throw away whatever it currently believes about where it is and start over from a clean slate. If the receiver had genuinely gotten stuck on a stale or wrong estimate, that reset can fix it. If the roughness in a track instead comes from tree cover, nearby buildings, or ordinary GPS noise, a restart does not touch any of those, because none of them live in the phone at all.
What a restart actually resets
A GPS receiver does not calculate a position from nothing every time it is asked for one. It keeps a running picture in memory of which satellites it expects overhead and roughly where they sit, built up from recent fixes, and it leans on that picture to compute new positions quickly. Restarting the phone clears that picture out entirely. The next fix after a restart has to be worked out closer to from scratch, which is slower, but also starts clean rather than carrying forward whatever the receiver had been assuming.
That is a genuine reset, and it is the same process a receiver goes through at the very start of any hike, before it has settled in â a stretch that is rougher for a few moments and then steadies out.
The one situation where that reset actually helps
Occasionally a receiver gets stuck rather than merely noisy: it keeps reporting a position that stopped updating properly, or one that is confidently wrong in a way that does not wobble back toward the truth the way ordinary GPS jitter does. That is a state problem, not an environment problem, and it is the one case a restart is genuinely built to fix, because it forces the stuck estimate to be thrown out and rebuilt rather than nudged.
This is uncommon. Most rough patches in a track are not the receiver being stuck on a wrong answer â they are the receiver giving an honest, if noisy, answer to a hard question, because of what is actually between it and the sky.
What a restart cannot touch
A dense forest canopy, a narrow street between tall buildings, and a canyon wall all do the same thing to a GPS signal: they block some satellites outright and let others reach the receiver only after bouncing off a surface first, which adds a small delay that reads as a small position error. None of that is a setting, a cache, or a piece of stale memory on the phone â it is a property of the ground you are standing on. Restarting resets what the phone believes; it does not move a single tree or building out of the way, so the same rough patch of sky produces the same rough patch of track whether the phone was just restarted or has been running for hours.
Ordinary GPS altitude and position noise falls in the same category. A receiver held perfectly still on flat, open ground still wobbles by a metre or two, because vertical and fine-grained horizontal precision are inherently the noisiest part of what GPS measures. That noise is present in a freshly restarted receiver exactly as much as in one that has been running all day.
What restarting costs, mid-hike
A restart is not free. The phone takes real time to power back on, and the freshly cleared location system has to go through the same settling-in process any receiver goes through at the start of a hike, which can take anywhere from a few seconds to closer to a minute before fixes are reliable again. If a recording was running when the restart happened, that recording was interrupted, not gently paused â whatever was tracking has to be reopened and, depending on the app, the walk picked back up as a new stretch rather than a seamless continuation.
That trade only makes sense when there is good reason to think the receiver is genuinely stuck rather than just working through a hard patch of sky. Restarting on the off chance, every time a track looks a little rough, spends real minutes solving a problem that, most of the time, was never a phone problem to begin with.
How to tell which one you are looking at
- A track that is jittery but still roughly follows the trail, with points scattered a few metres either side of the true path â ordinary noise, worse under cover, and not something a restart changes.
- A track that jumps once to a clearly wrong spot and then sits there, unmoving, for longer than a normal pause â closer to a stuck fix, and one of the few cases where a restart is worth the interruption.
- A rough patch that lines up with a specific stretch of trail â under trees, between buildings, along a canyon wall â and clears up once you are back in the open, on the same recording, without needing a restart at all.
- Roughness right at the very start of the recording, before the receiver has had time to settle in â expected on every hike, and it passes on its own within the first minute or so.
