Does a phone case affect GPS accuracy on a hike?

For the vast majority of cases, no — a slab of plastic or silicone around a phone does nothing meaningful to the GPS signal passing through it. The exception is narrow but real: cases that put metal or a strong magnet directly over the antenna, which on most iPhones sits near the top edge of the back. The material people tend to blame — a thick, rugged case — is usually fine. The one they tend to trust — a slim wallet case — is the one worth a second look.

The short answer

A plain plastic, silicone, or leather case does not block GPS in any way that shows up in practice. GPS signals are radio waves in the microwave band, and non-metallic materials are essentially transparent to them — that is true whether the case is a thin skin or a thick rugged shell. The cases worth asking about are the ones that add metal or magnets near the antenna, most commonly a wallet case with a metal card-holding plate, or a magnetic mount and its matching metal insert. Those can attenuate the signal, because metal reflects and absorbs radio waves that plastic simply lets through.

Why GPS is unusually sensitive to begin with

A GPS signal travels over twenty thousand kilometres from satellite to receiver, and by the time it reaches a phone it is extremely faint — weaker than a lot of the everyday radio noise sitting near the same frequency band. The receiver is built to pull that faint signal out anyway, but there is not much margin to spare. Anything that removes even a small fraction of the signal before it reaches the antenna eats into a budget that was already thin, in a way it would not for a stronger, closer signal like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. That is the reason GPS accuracy shows up as sensitive to things that most other radios on a phone barely notice.

What can actually get in the way

Metal is the material that matters. A phone case with a metal plate — the kind built into some wallet cases to hold cards magnetically, or a metal kickstand or battery pack integrated into a case — sits directly between the antenna and the sky if it happens to cover the antenna's location. Depending on how much of the antenna it covers and how thick the metal is, that can measurably weaken the signal reaching the receiver. A strong magnet by itself, without metal, generally does not interfere with GPS the way it can with a compass, since GPS positioning does not rely on magnetic sensing at all — the concern with magnetic mounts is almost always the metal insert paired with the magnet, not the magnet itself.

Water is the other real blocker, for what it is worth, which is why a case that traps a layer of water against the back of the phone — a loose waterproof pouch with an air gap, for instance — can do more to a signal than most solid cases ever would. That is a case-and-conditions combination, not a property of any one case on its own.

What does not meaningfully affect it

Thickness on its own is not the deciding factor — a thick rugged case made of plastic and rubber lets a GPS signal through about as easily as a thin one does, because the material is what matters, not how much of it there is. A screen protector, a plain leather back, a silicone bumper, and a hard plastic shell all fall into the same category: none of them contain the kind of material that meaningfully absorbs or reflects a GPS signal. Colour, texture, and brand have no bearing on it either — those are cosmetic choices with nothing to do with what is actually going on at the radio level.

How to tell if a case is actually the reason

The most direct way to check is to record the same short, familiar stretch — a walk around a block, a section of a trail you know well — twice, once with the case on and once with the phone bare, and compare the two tracks. If a case is genuinely interfering, the difference tends to show up as a track that is consistently rougher or drifts more, not as one single wrong point. A single stray spike on an otherwise clean track is far more likely to be an ordinary, one-off GPS glitch than anything to do with the case — those happen occasionally regardless of what the phone is wearing, and are covered separately in the guide to a track having a random spike.

Things that trip people up

  • Blaming a thick, rugged case for poor accuracy — thickness is not the issue, and a bulky plastic case is no more of a problem than a thin one.
  • Assuming any case with a magnetic mount is automatically a problem — the magnet itself is not what interferes with GPS; a metal plate or insert near the antenna is.
  • Not noticing a wallet case's card plate as a possible cause, because it looks like a minor accessory rather than a case — the metal in that plate behaves the same as metal anywhere else on the back of the phone.
  • Judging a case by one odd point on a track rather than a pattern across the whole route — a single spike is ordinary GPS noise far more often than it is the case.
